Norwegian Breakaway Caribbean - All. Chose this cruise to see how we liked NCL. We didn't. Been on Cruises and the customer service was the worst by far. Will not cruise again.

Nice ship. Good specialty Good specialty dining buffet for was bad real bad. Entertainment was very good. But to be rudely treated by crew is unacceptable. Bar service was terrible. Cabin steward never said hello. And was vacuuming at 8 AM outside the cabin.

Left room dirty wet towels on the floor poor attitude. O Sheehan s food was good poor service hostess was rude. First time in 23 cruises I ever went to relations to complain. Bar hop at on the 16th deck was weak never picked up empty glasses all cruise long it was a mess up there on matter what time of day.

Full ashtrays everywhere. Read Less. Sail Date October Helpful 1. Fyrcop 2 Reviews Written. We booked this cruise about 3 weeks after a Carnival cruise just to get a feel for the ship and the hospitality differences between NCL and Carnival. This cruise on the Breakaway, was, in our estimation, a step down from Carnival.

Embarkation was okay but not as efficient as Carnival. The embarkation terminal was crowded, unsettling and disorganized. We eventually made it to the ship without any other issues. The process took about minutes. Carnival took 10 minutes or less.

Debarkation was about the same for both ships and it took about 30 minutes to get to the curb. Our balcony cabin was not ready on our arrival, although we were told it would be ready for occupation. We had many problems with the cabin functions throughout the cruise. The shower overflowed everyday, due to poor drainage.

This caused the shower water to rise up to our ankles, overflow and drain into a secondary drain behind the toilet causing the bath mat and floor to be soaked every time we used the shower. We told the room steward,, who apparently tried to fix the problem, to no avail. After asking her to fix the issue after 3 days, we gave up and just let the floor in the cabin bathroom flood everyday. The water at the sink tap was scalding hot even on the lowest cold setting that, at best, gave you lukewarm water.

No cold water ever came from the tap. The toilets quit working on at least two occasions and we were told it was a problem on the deck we were on and would be fixed, which it was after several hours on two different day. The entertainment was excellent on the ship in the showroom, not so much in the atrium. Many shows were hosted by the Cruise Director who was bland, boing and unenthusiastic.

Many activities were held in the very crowded atrium and were so loud that you could only stay for a few moments during the day. O'Sheenan's bar was nice and there food was prepared for you when you were seated for no up charge. The ice cream sundaes there had an added charge and were terrible. Smoke from the open deck casino permeated the center of the ship and if you are cigarette smoke sensitive, many central areas of the ship were effectively "off-limits".

The speciality restaurants of Cagney's and La Cucina had up charges based on what you ordered. Teppinaki was fun with the center grill but the 5, quarter sized shrimp and dime sized scallops were a disappointment.

The food was over salted and drenched in soy sauce. Moderno was terrible. The food was over seasoned, salty and tough.

None of the meats provided were of good quality. The dessert was grainy and overly sweet. We were never asked in either of these two restaurant's about the quality of the food provided. The Garden Cafe buffet was a disaster. Noisy, crowded, dirty tables, unenthusiastic employees and just a really poor attempt at feeding the masses.

The kids area chicken fingers were the best thing on the menu there. We went one day at lunch for about 30 minutes and never returned to this venue the rest of the trip. Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville was fun. The bar drinks were good and the service probably the best on the ship. We had poor, uninspired food in the main dining rooms. We ate in all 3 during the cruise for dinner and the Manhattan room was by far the best.

The servers in the other two rooms was spotty at best. Then pool areas were crowded, especially since we had 2 sea days, a non-stop added sea day due to Great Stirrup Cay unable to accessed because of high winds making tendering dangerous.

No compensation offered for this missed stop by NCL. The islands of St. Thomas, Tortola and St. John are still recovering from the hurricane but it was nice to get off the ship and enjoy the beautiful beaches. Ship internet was SLOW. We had a minute package but spent at least a third of the minutes waiting for the system to load, even when we were standing 10 feet from the internet area, located in the noisy atrium area.

We also had a problem getting drink servers to ask about beverages throughout the ship. It is a good "ploy" by NCL to sell you the drink package up front with added tips and then make you go in search of drinks at bars on your own. We were only approached by a drink server in any public area of the ship 3 occasions in 7 days. I don't know if is the lack of staff or intentional reduction by NCL to curb providing pre-paid drinks to the guests to save money.

Compared to Carnival, which we though we would never say, NCL doesn't equal the service and amenities that Carnival provided us, three weeks earlier, for about an equal cruise fare and amenity package.

Helpful 2. Upon arrival to our stateroom I always make sure sheets and bathroom is clean. While wiping out the toilet there was a brown, black and greenish film inside the toilet rim. In 7 days the sheets on the bed were never changed and the In 7 days the sheets on the bed were never changed and the bathroom was cleaned slightly. So if you choose to sail with NCL check you account frequently because they try to get extra money out of you any way possible.

On three separate occasions I encountered rude and disrespectful staff. The experience at sea was very rocky and ship did a lot of dipping and everyone was holding on to keep fr stumbling.

I was not impressed by this cruise line and it is highly unlikely that I will cruise with NCL again! Deemb6 1 Review Written. No swimming with the pigs. 15 Cruise Dining Hacks - Cruise Critic

Dining on a cruise ship is not all buffet lines and 3 a. We offer our insider tips and tricks of the cruise trade to keep you well fed, in the know and up to your ears in ice cream at sea. Read on for 15 cruise dining hacks that will change the way you think about eating on a cruise ship. From one of our editors: "When I cruise alone, I love room service , but I'm impatient and the menus are often limited.

Instead, I go to the buffet, fill a plate with whatever I'm craving and take it back to my room to enjoy on my balcony. Similarly, we've sat down for lunch in a main dining room and requested to take the leftovers -- sometimes waiters will arrange to have your half-finished meal or dessert sent back to your room for you. Off-the-menu room service. Although closing out your cruise with an upscale meal at a specialty restaurant might seem like a nice idea, it's actually better and cheaper to kick off your cruise in one of these alternative venues.

Many cruise lines offer breaks and bonuses associated with specialty dining on the first night of your sailing. Celebrity and Royal Caribbean give first-night diners a break on the per-person cover, while Carnival is known for offering a free bottle of wine to cruisers who spend their first dinner chowing down in the onboard steakhouse. You read that right. If the dairy delights aren't enough to sway you, the cow-themed cabin decor might, not to mention the access to a special concierge lounge typically reserved for suite passengers.

While all lines will go off-menu to cater to food allergies or dietary concerns -- low sugar, gluten-free, no shellfish, you name it -- many will also acquiesce to regular passenger requests for special meals or dishes.

Likewise, luxury cruise lines like Seabourn will literally cater to your every whim; if that whim is Champagne and caviar all day every day, or an elaborate Peking duck dinner, so be it.

In many suite-class restaurants, if the ingredients are on the menu, the chef can probably incorporate them into a custom dish of your choosing. It always pays to ask -- the worst that can happen is someone says, "no.

Many first-time cruisers are surprised to find that hardly any drinks are included in the cruise fare to wash down their grub. Expect to pay for a soda package, and prepare for the likelihood that the juice, lemonade or iced tea in the buffet-area dispensers will be watered down. Easy to pack and easy to infuse, powdered drink mixes can be a lifesaver for thirsty-and-whiny kids and picky adults. Likewise, if you prefer your beverages to be hot, bring your favorite brand of tea, instant coffee or hot chocolate mix.

The truly hardcore will bring on their own cases of soda, where allowed, or even ground coffee and a French press. Want to add a kick to your cone? Take sugary cereal at breakfast for ice cream toppings later on. Think frosted cornflakes on chocolate soft-serve and Froot Loops crushed over your bowl of vanilla. Tiny boxes of cereal make for a great late-night snack to keep stashed in the cabin, as well.

Beyond main dining rooms, which offer sit-down and made-to-order breakfast specialties, scope out alternative dining spots with a morning menu. Did someone say breakfast burrito? Because you're not being charged by the plate, you won't find sharing fees or sideways glances if you share entrees with your spouse, order two appetizers for a main dish or try a half portion of an entree as your app.

Or, order multiple desserts, no regrets. Only want a slight splurge? Order off the kids' menu for smaller dessert portions. Don't feel like you're required to order three traditional courses -- customizing is one of the perks of a vacation at sea. Found around cruise ships at the buffet, during afternoon tea or near the coffee bar , cookies shouldn't be hard to acquire onboard. Dipping them in milk is a time-tested enhancement to the cookie-eating experience, but shake it up -- no, really -- by mixing cookie crumbles in a cup with soft-serve and some milk for a handcrafted milkshake in minutes.

Prefer your sweets to be solid? Put a little bit of that twist between two cookies for an instant ice cream sandwich. Cruise ship cafes or bakeries with a specialty coffee menu will likely charge for your cappuccino unless you are on a luxury line or have an all-inclusive drink package.

What they typically won't charge you for are the snacks on offer at the same coffee bar. From paninis to pastries, spots like Princess Cruises' International Cafe or Viking Ocean's Living Room serve up items like orzo salad, fresh fruit, quiche or cake to satisfy your small cravings between meals or any time of day -- gratis. Did you know that all of the main dining room meals are planned out for the week -- and that you can look at menus in advance? Just visit the front desk and request to see the selections available for each night of your cruise.

The benefit is that you can decide which nights you want to stick to included dining, and when you would rather patronize an alternative restaurant or graze the buffet. Anything to quell that fear of missing out. Some one-off dining events are easily missed if you're not on the lookout. Do a little research before you board, study the daily agenda left in your cabin each night or ask on your first day about special offerings like tea service, sea day brunch, lunch at specialty restaurants, Princess' crab shack or Carnival's Seuss-themed Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast.

Sometimes these pop-ups or one-time dining experiences cost an additional fee; some also have limited space, so set up reservations to be safe. Sea days are the best times to seek out these special dining events.

Not once, but on two separate cruises did we try some variation of a ravioli in truffle sauce and our palates went berserk. We simply had to have it, and couldn't spare the thought of waiting until our next cruise to taste it again.

So we pre-ordered it for dinner the following night. If something you try is too good to pass up, see if the chef will accommodate a request to save you some or prepare it for the next day. It might not always be possible, but advanced notice helps. We spread the wealth by splitting our second portion as a starter for the table the following night. If you're in a port that allows you to take food off your ship mainly U.

Sure, trying the local fare is part of experiencing the destination, but on an all-day coach tour, your stomach might be thanking you for grabbing a snack.

We agree that family dinners are an important part of life at home and should carry-over to vacation, especially on a multigenerational cruise where everyone is doing his or her own thing all day.

However, that doesn't mean that every single night of your cruise should require orchestrating three-course meals with four kids. An early buffet meal, a slice from the onboard pizzeria or a room service banquet can mean the gang is fed and on their way to the kids' club in time for you to make a later dinner reservation.
