Can anyone tell me about the area known as "Foggy Bottom"? Are there attractions there or is it "just an area"? It is an area known as "Foggy Bottom". It's located between the area of "Georgetown" and "The Mall". George Washington University is in Foggy Bottom. There isn't much to see in that area. Foggy Bottom is just an area.
It's a good hotel location, though, if that's why you ask. It's close enough to walk to some of the monuments like Lincoln Memorial , as well as Georgetown and Dupont Circle for dining and nightlife options. There's also metro nearby and the DC Circulator bus.
The area really does include George Washington University and not much else. Is definitely walking distance to Georgetown, however. I actually like staying in that part of DC - it seems a bit quieter and upscale to me than other parts, but that may just be perception. Just wanted to give you an idea in case you we wondering about where to stay. Also, highly recommend the Fairmont if you can get a decent rate usually on weekends.
Hope that helps! Let's not confuse Foggy Bottom with the West End! Foggy Bottom refers to the low-lying former swampland that once occupied the site where the State Dept and the Lincoln Memorial now sit. I guess I was just thinking they were the same area because the closest metro to those hotels is the Foggy Bottom metro - do correct me if I am wrong - but I know that is the metro we have taken when staying in that area!
