20 Best Jobs if You're Over 40 | Best Life

Be prepared, this is a long article that may be of interest to you, the older man looking for change in his employment situation! Want to do something different than what you are doing now?

Tired of sitting behind a desk all day? Then take a look at some of these opportunities and decide if any of them are right for you.

I ran into my old friend Carl earlier this week over at the local mall. Having my laptop with me I quickly opened up the slick high speed latest and greatest laptop I purchased a couple months back too quickly glance through the accounting jobs located here on the island locally.

For second time he instructed me that he was not interested in pursuing any type of accounting or bookkeeping job. He tells me he has had it with interoffice politics and long hours crunching numbers on difficult to learn accounting software.

Taking the hint I quickly typed in the search term into Google: jobs for year-old man. Carl had a mortgage to pay, child support to cough up every month and a retirement to somehow fund which was looming on the horizon. Having said that, he still seemed very eager to make a change in how he earned his living. Carl had a great upward trend of a career that resulted in a fantastic opportunity that garnered a great deal of respect in the community and significant financial rewards.

However, having a career can sometimes be not what one expects in the final outcome of success one strives for when planning out their eventual career path. Carl is one such person. Sitting with Carl watching the people walk by as we drank our coffee he shared with me that all he wanted was a new job. He did not want to be locked into a certain career path where there were expectations of forward movement regarding job roles and responsibilities.

He just wanted a job where he can start anew and then at a later date possibly position himself however he saw fit. Because Carl is an older man coming in at 54 years of age there were certain criteria that needed to be met in order for him to think about pursuing any of these jobs and make it work for him and his particular situation.

First, the job had to be one that was easy to enter and did not require any significant education or training. Second, the job had to be just that — a job. He wanted to go to work at eight in the morning and leave the job at the end of the day not feeling any need to be working during his nonpaid hours.

As he told me, if you wanted a career requiring long hours and working weekends he would just stay in the accounting profession. As mentioned above these jobs required very little training, ease of entry and fairly good compensation. Carl told me over and over he was done working 12 to 14 hour days and no longer wanted to think about working on a Saturday or Sunday during the audit season.

Going into work at eight and leaving by five was what he was looking for. He also no longer wanted the stress of having to keep up with continuing education for a career position that strangled the life out of him. A big part of that is the ability to spend time with their family and not be sitting behind a desk at 8 PM on a Friday evening while your family waits for you at home.

Now that Carl is single and without a job he would like to reinvent himself and create a life that is a better fit for what he seeks. Similar to Carl this old colleague of mine worked on the financial side of the business I worked at and, when we all got laid off from our jobs…. The benefits working for the Fed as a mailman are pretty outstanding. I remember my colleague telling me that despite being in his mids he found the process of applying and eventually being hired as a mailman fairly straightforward and not difficult at all.

Here in Hawaii you do see 18 wheeler trucks transporting goods to and from various enterprises throughout the day on our one Highway. However, when on the mainland the number of 18 wheeler trucks on the road is just unbelievable. I keep hearing from numerous sources that the demand for 18 wheeler truck drivers is exceeding supply of drivers.

This creates a fantastic opportunity for someone over the age of 50 who likes to travel and get out on the open road. There are numerous schools that teach the driving of such large vehicles and even assist you with acquiring jobs upon graduating from their programs. Not bad but not great either. This job is fairly straightforward. Load up the delivery truck of the packages to be delivered. Drive to each destination to deliver said package. Get the appropriate signature of delivery from the customer.

Then get back into the truck and go to your next destination. For this type of job there is not all that much of extensive training involved and the daily work allows you to not be sitting in an office all day long looking at the clock wishing it was 5 p.

With ease of entry and very limited training this job could be ideal for the 52 or year-old man looking to make a job change. According to Glassdoor. I am sure a lot of that depends on overtime during the holiday season that require a high need for such a service. Again, here we have another great job that pays fairly well that an older man can step into with little difficulty.

I once worked with a guy some 30 years ago in retail buying and had lost touch with him up until about two years ago. When I ran into him I discovered he was selling real estate for living and seemed to be very happy with his choice of career. Driving a late-model Mercedes and working a very flexible schedule my friend told me that the best move he ever made was getting out of retail and focusing on becoming a real estate agent. The training required to become a real estate agent is to simply go through one of the many real estate agent training schools that you can find online and then sitting for a local exam.

Once you pass the exam you find a local real estate firm and hang out a shingle and start looking for properties or buyers to represent. For an older man in his 50s this could be a great job to make a substantial income if you still have the drive to work hard to spend some time learning the ropes from those in the industry.

This type of job is your typical sales job where if you are willing to work hard you can create a very nice income for yourself. However, some areas of the country are eager for any healthy physically fit man, who is intelligent and yearns to be a law enforcement officer, to apply and work in their local jurisdiction. This type of job brings with it a great deal of potential danger while at the same time brings with it a sense of giving back to your community.

Being a police officer usually entails going through some sort of training Academy for three or four months and then upon graduation you earn the role of a law enforcement officer. While the ease of entry for this type a job is not as easy as say, the above-mentioned truck driver, this job does come with a higher degree of excitement and opportunity for self-growth.

The training for a welder usually starts out with someone going through an apprenticeship type program that over a period of a year or two moves into full status as a designated welder. And of course, working as a welder there is a lot of opportunity for overtime which would only escalate your total annual earnings.

All of a sudden you lose your job and it looks to you as if your financial future is heading out into the sunset. All systems are set up for you, all marketing is done for you and all that is left is for someone like you to come in and manage the people and ensure the quality of the product getting out to the customer is of company standards.

An older man who is in his 50s and has some experience managing people would prove very beneficial to such an enterprise. If you have the experience of managing people and resources and are willing to take on the responsibility of managing a fast food restaurant this could be a good job to transition to when in your early to mids. Unlike 20 years ago prior to the Internet there were limited opportunities for magazine writers, book authors or editors.

With the world of blogging and online magazines there is a constant need for consistent, high quality content to be written. This type of gig has no barrier to entry and can earn a quality writer a fairly good consistent income if they are willing to work hard and put in the time to produce quality content.

For a man over the age of 50 who enjoys being creative in the written form a good place to start would be to write for a company called Textbroker. This website acts as a broker and puts writers together with clients seeking content where the writer is paid by the piece that they produce.

Once the writer gains enough experience they can venture away from a Textbroker. There are numerous books that you can find on Amazon Kindle that discuss how to go about being a professional writer that are worth a quick look. I once had a roommate some 15 years ago who initially worked as a security guard and then all of a sudden got a job working at our local airport as a TSA agent. If you enjoy being around people and being of assistance to people who are traveling this very much could be the job you are searching for.

This man was in his early 60s and seemed to be quite knowledgeable about the investments we discussed over our hour-long meeting. Upon ending our meeting I asked him about his background and what brought him into this type of work. Keep in mind this man was in his early 60s! While many of the folks who enter into a training program for investment counselors fail those that make it seem to truly enjoy what they do.

But if you like people and you like sales and you like working with upscale clients this may be your new job that could create a nice lifestyle for you down the road. According to Ziprecruiter. I put this last on my list only because the idea of someone being a taxi driver does not thrill me at all. Having two friends in the past working as taxi drivers really informed me of the potential perils of this type of work.

Both of these friends constantly had problems with their customers from time to time who would either refuse to pay them or were just sketchy making them feel very uncomfortable picking them up as a fare.

Clients go online, schedule and pay for the drive through the Uber website. All you as the driver need to do is show up at the designated address for pickup and then drive them to their destination. In doing my research to discover how much an Uber driver earns it seemed to be far less than what is claimed in the advertising by Uber.

Conversely, according to Payscale. Not a very high salary by any means. As you look at these above listed jobs you must keep in mind that these are not career positions.

If you are over the age of 50 and you are a man and you want to do something very different than say, like my friend Carl, an accountant…. Stay tuned! In a Dead-End Job? About to be Laid-Off? Related posts: Should I move to another region of the country to find a job?
